Eurosceptics...

As far as I remember, some years ago (not many), when the value of the Euro went down to .85 to the Dollar, Eurosceptics all around were predicting its death for being too weak. Now the same Eurosceptics are doing the same prediction for its being to strong. Taking into account that the Sterling and the Euro are keeping their relative value more or less stable, one should come to the conclusion that the Dollar is collapsing. Something really disagreeable will probably happen in the US, not in Europe.

Good news for Europe

Good news for Europe: the agreement on the new treaty and the elections in Poland give a new lease o life to the European project.

England is now isolated in its pro-american, anti-european strategy. Let’s hope for the Scottish accession.

The issue of the Turkish accession is postponed for long, now that it entered into armed conflict in Kurdistan. Nobody will vote for that – I think.

Now let’s ratify the new treaty by the national Parliaments. That is the democratic procedure, avoiding the demagogy of referendums.

On the road again

Lá se consegiu chegar a cordo quanto a uma versão reduzida da Constituição Europeia. Ficaram pelo caminha alguma coisa simbólicas como o hino e a bandeira, mas não é grave porque toda a gente os usa já, mesmo sem consagração formal, o que é ainda mais forte. No restante, avançou-se na pate institucional com um aprofunamento real, no que tange à redução dos vetos e à melhor institucionalização da presidência. Não se conseguiu tudo... mas pôs-se o comboio em andamento.

Agora importa escrever e assinar o tratado.
